They don't hard cap the technology. They just test selectively if they feel it meets the goal of their community. Based on testing results they decide to adopt or not and if there will be hard limits.

I just texted an amish person yesterday. Of course he has a limited phone that he is only allowed to use for certain things like doing business with the English and only during certain times of day.

The root of the difference is they default deny new technologies while we default accept. I don't have the same goals so I wouldn't set the same rules they do. I have been trying to move towards a default deny deliberate adoption model.

Nostr only is cypherpunk Amish. I have decided that I am willing to use social media but only with the limit that I only use protocols not platforms and only where I have full control over who and what is in my feed.

I recently set a hard line that location information and photos of my family must be e2ee. Adopt signal or go without. Grandparents jumped right on and have no issue.
