#asknostr I was having a great discussion with a friend and the conversation turned to #Bitcoin …

I was excitedly explaining mining and the technical basics of mining pools. I also mentioned the ties of mining to energy and how people are coming up with novel methods of mining such as using trapped methane to turn wasted energy into an asset. We are both engineers so I thought he would be interested. Without getting angry with me, he stated, “well I think it should be banned. It provides no societal benefit at all and uses so much energy.” I kindly explained that if you compare it to the traditional banking sector, it actually is modest in its energy use. Our financial system uses vast computing power. He didn’t seem to understand my point.

I didn’t want to start an argument and I had somewhere to be so we said our goodbyes. So #Nostr #plebs, what are a few points I should have said to better defend Bitcoin? I’m not going to force my “religion” on him but I feel like if it clicked for him it would be pretty awesome. #grownostr

I’ve found that the “#Bitcoin uses too much energy” argument is effectively countered by “whose energy is it?”

Often this will silence your counterpart, because they never gave any thought to where the energy comes from and to what other use it could have been put.
