It gives them a sense of power. Look, I can make all these people leave their houses, get stuck in traffic, spend less time with their families, just so they can sit at a desk and email people. Unless you work in an industry where you have to physically work with other people, it makes no logical sense.
To a manager, it’s not as satisfying if they can’t see people working for them, especially if others can’t see it.
