Layertwolabs have proposed a Z-cash type sidechain for complete end-2-end encrypted BTC transactions.
a side chain seems the likely solution
it seems like at the end of the day the possibilities for Bitcoin are limitless, without ever necessarily updating the core protocol ever again ;-)
