Seems to me that the biggest hurdle for self-sovereign #lightning is opening that first channel. I have liquidity, ready to mingle. Am I being too nervous about who I open with?

If you eventually plan to open several, probably not super-important. If it's going to be your only channel, then best to stick with an LSP.
