Learn to use a paperclip to pick the locks of your handcuffs. Learn to break and cut flex cuffs and zip ties.

Always carry a paperclip and/or plastic handcuff key.

The simple Peerless handcuff and the S&W handcuffs have a double lock feature.

the Peerless type, strike the double bars on a hard wall or floor to disengage the double lock.

S&W not so much. Will work but requires a painfully hard strike...

Once the double lock is disengaged, attack the lock. This lock is a simple lever / ratchet that can be lifted by an L shaped bend in the paperclip.
