-THE ISLAND LIFE-

The Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland, is a moving tribute to the Swiss Guards who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution in 1792.

Carved into a sandstone cliff between 1820 and 1821 by Lukas Ahorn and designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, the monument measures an impressive 10 meters long and 6 meters high.

It portrays a wounded lion collapsing over a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis, symbolizing the Swiss Guards’ loyalty and sacrifice.

Mark Twain called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world," capturing the sculpture’s profound impact on visitors.
