Is there a Gell-Mann amnesia equivalent for government? Where people will see their elected officials doing something reprehensible over there but then suddenly trust their motives on any other government program?
Something like that is at play. I can't quite grasp how people can put their faith in entities that they know are corrupt.
Orwell probably explained it best with "double think"- holding two contradictory beliefs simultaneously and accepting them both as true
