I would be far more amenable to the situation if it wasn't a crisis of children and insurance

Yes, a lot of the advice, though well meaning, ignores the immediate situation, outgoings, etc. One might be facing homelessness, or ongoing costs (children, food insurance etc) and it’s this pressure and environment that makes experimenting with a new start rather risky or almost impossible, especially if your mind is not in the right place or life is currently unstable. It might mean taking on something in the short term while developing the side hustle. Good luck, keep positive, stay focused/active!
That’s exactly how I got out of the employment trap. I worked in real estate and when the mortgage crisis of 2009 hit not only could I not find a job in my field but unemployment in my area was over 10% and I couldn’t even get a job at McDonald’s.
We were food, insecure, and I had no choice but to figure out some way to make money so I could keep a roof over my kids head and they could eat.
The economy is far worse than what we are being told. Please don’t let yourself get into the same position I let myself get into. It’s a lot easier to do a little something on the side while you’re looking for a job then it is to start with nothing when you’re really in need.
