If we have debts with other countries that have debts with us why don’t we just get rid of those debts equally?

i would say because a debt to the US means those countries must get USD, to get USD they have to sell stuff to the US, they basically work for the US, so US has no interest in clearing them out, and debt from the US to any other country is a bit meaningless to the US because it can print it.
