Moreover, the world isn't as safe as you think It is. In developed areas it's much, much less of a concern.
You think you'd actually be able to defend yourself in certain situations, but without a gun you're just dead, with no options to defend yourself.
Just because that's an acceptable scenario to /you/ does not make it short-sighted, nor incorrect. Maybe try taking a dose of that reality you say is so apparent.
