Conservative Christians in Alabama Canceled Yoga for Nearly 30 Years: Ban Finally Lifted in 2021—But Don't Say Namaste

Nearly four years ago, Alabama ended a nearly 30-year "moral panic" by lifting its ban on yoga in public schools—though with bizarre restrictions. While students can now practice yoga poses (parents' written permission required), they are still prohibited from chanting mantras, saying "namaste," using Sanskrit terms, or practicing meditation in 2025.

The 1993 ban was pushed by conservative Christian groups because—get ready for it—

that would promote Hinduism.

Despite yoga being more popular in America than in its birthplace of India, with most practitioners viewing it primarily as exercise rather than religion, and the fact that Hinduism is not evangelical and has no conversion process.

And for those arguing "religion doesn't belong in schools"—these are the same schools where, by law in 47 states, from age five, students are required—with varying exemptions for students or staff who wish to opt out—to participate in the daily ritual of standing, facing the flag, hands over hearts, to pledge allegiance to the flag and to the Republic, "one nation under God."

Apparently, nothing strikes fear into the heart of conservative Christians quite like stretching and deep breathing.

They probably think it’s the first step toward instituting Sharia law. (Don’t bother explaining that it’s from an entirely different religion.)

Sounds like a joke, but… 🙃

Turns out it's always been clown world.

Moral of the story - fuck public school

The most repressed mf’s

Classic case of Momma Boucher syndrome.

The Waterboy's Momma drove herself to ignorance and isolation by declaring everything she didn't understand to be "the devil!".

What is ironic about this situation is that Jesus taught his followers to love their neighbors. I don't remember seeing him say to "manipulate the power of the state to direct its legal monopoly on the use of force against your neighbors because they express reverence for the Creator using words and practices with which you're not familiar."

Most modern, mainstream Christians are hypocrites.

Surprisingly, Alabama is ranked 45th out of the 50 states on health outcomes…

Thy shall not breathe correctly!

Thy shall not stretch!

Thy shall not be present!

I have a few friends who fancy themselves progressive Christians from ‘guitar churches,’ but they are still nervous about topics such as yoga or meditation.

From a Christian perspective, I believe that God looks at the heart of a person rather than at how their legs are positioned.

Lunatic shit

This is the same state where it's illegal to have sex toys. Good ol' religious puritanism.

Also I thought it was unconstitutional to force students to pledge allegiance (West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 1943).

Indeed, but there is a loophole: Sex toys are available to sell as "novelty toys," just not as "sex toys." It's like selling a "bong" is also illegal, but if you call it a "water pipe—for tobacco use" and you also sell other legal smoking products, then it is legal.

RE: West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 1943

"...states can still require it while offering exemptions. And states have varying levels of exemptions — for example, Florida and Texas allow for a student to be exempted from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance only if a parent or guardian consents."

Schools could also argue that it's tOo DiStRaCtInG to refuse to do the pledge as well. That's a common loophole I had to deal with in middle and high school.

Everything has at least one loophole in it.

As a student, I was frequently sent to the principal's office—almost daily—for exercising my constitutional right. I would remain seated, put my left hand over my heart or face out the window instead of at the flag in silent protest, until they finally just gave up and allowed me to remain seated. I am patriotic in my own way; I will not be forced me into blindly pledging allegiance to anything I do not fully support.

*not be forced into

Well said. No king but Christ, or whichever deities you believe in.

That’s wild!
