If systems are free and open, everything will be tried. If all speech is allowed, all speech will be tried.

I'm not a free speech expert. I'm not a rights activist. I may get some takes wrong. My opinions and thoughts are all based on my 30 years of experience being on the Internet and using social/chat features of the Internet most of my life. I've witnessed these social conversations happen again and again.

If all speech is allowed, we need to call out speech that is undesirable. This includes hate speech and harassment. Free speech isn't a free pass to be an asshole and get away with it. Free speech doesn't mean you can be toxic and people will automatically forgive and forget. Free speech means you can say whatever you want, but you're not free from consequences.

We're trying to #grownostr and it's truly a community effort. Zaps can help with this. Zaps are the signal. Zaps are one of the best forms of feedback that we have. Zap positive content. Call out negative content. It's that simple.

I think there is a negative side to zaps, almost unavoidable. Zaps aren't a great signal imo, there's a fair amount of zap farming through low effort posting of bitcoin slogans, cos that kinda works.

Zaps could be background /hidden maybe?

Zaps can be faked, too. But the real issue here is that far more people will Zap good content with real Zaps than fake Zaps or bad content getting Zapped.

I feel like zaps create a perverse incentive, in some cases. People are "zap farming" as you put it so well, posting what is often crap to further their greed. It's similar to spam.

At some point those farmers need to zap back. If they dont zap back people will move on without them.
