I have seen nearly 10 pitches during this start-up hackthon and most of they are still thinking about vertical marketplace or o2o platforms such as platform to find friends, babysitters or pets.

No offense to Icelanders or European friends. But small vertical just can't become a sustainable internet business. E-commerce and O2O (online to offline) always need to be a "platform of everything" to become profitable and substainable.

It's very difficult to operate a vertical platform unless you can reduce the cost dramatically.

What Iceland or small countries need is a good generic O2O platform for most things. This platform will be generic yet flexible enough so that each vertical can be operated on top of it without creating seprate software.

Nostr to the rescue. Vertical business can hugely benifit from Nostr because they don't have to create standalone software and buy in all sorts of cost of building a software. They can just use Nostr to commerce and win.

I will start an Iceland Nostr Meetup.

Refer them to government funding then?

Project based work vs capital growth work

Oh, I'm not the invester here. I'm just a guest. I'm here to observe and learn more about Icelandic start-up community.

But yes, I am suprised by how many NGO or non-profit funding Europe has. It's just a very different model from USA.

Non-profit funding are necessary to solve social problems that can't make money but important. However, there are also people who just creates NGO for the purpose of getting grants from these fundings which is like the worst part of Capitalism and Socialism combined without true vision or executions. That's why non-profit orgs are usually not efficient at solving problems or at least that's my bias.

I don't have enough knowledge to judge yet. All my comments are my Silicon Valley bias. Khan Academy is a great non-profit and I admire people who do non-profit with honesty and results.

PS: This note is not a reply to you, but just me typing my weird brain out.

We have a robust rfp project based sector, but there’s no democracy on what the projects are. It’s probably the same there in the NGO world.

What is rfp?
