Yea, running a small public node is a great experiment and a great way to learn about lightning and more about bitcoin, but at some point the risks to your funds and the losses incurred on channel closures outweighs the educational/learning benefits. The good thing is, whenever a situation comes up that you do need a public node, now you have that knowledge and firsthand experience to fall back on.
