My friend and I used to be huge movie buff DVD collectors. While I stopped collecting and ripping, his collection grew. I often laughed at his massive DVD collection taking up space.

But now seeing how streaming has overtaken most media — and the intellectual property rights are gatekeeping what you can see on each platform, in each country, or if they’re even available on streaming at all, etc., I can see he was right.

You can’t actually *own* the media until you have a physical or digital copy.

Not your DVD or .mkv/.mp4, not your movie. Important lessons for digital media and digital scarcity.
