Imagine how much slower colonization would have gone without the Reformation and all the religious persecution in Europe. Natives might've been able to build up and modernize if Europeans hadn't been literally fleeing for their lives.
An easier life, might not be THE root cause, but if you live in a state when you couldn't receive welfare, given the opportunity would you move to a state where you could receive welfare?
I don't know about the US but over here it's because we constantly bomb those countries back into the stone age.
