The FIFA Women’s World Cup is happening in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand this month. I’m going to the Wellington matches.

New Zealand won its first World Cup finals match ever to open the tournament. The men’s and women’s teams have been to a bunch of World Cup finals because it’s relatively easy to qualify from Oceana, but they’ve never one until this week.

Interestingly what people call the World Cup is actually the final tournament. There are a couple years of qualifying matches that are mostly played at home between teams before the final.

The first match I saw was Costa Rica vs Spain. It was very lopsided with Spain dominating. Costa Rica managed to hold them off most of the match but fell apart a for a few minutes and gave up three quick goals.

I’m really looking forward to US vs Netherlands and New Zealand vs Philippines
