So many stores and restaurants say they can't hire enough help, and at the same time I've never seen this many homeless people panhandling at highway exits and intersections where I live.

Agreed. People don’t think working for a living is worth it any longer.
Imagine working 40 hours a week so that the government can take 30% of your pay, and at the end of the day, you still can’t afford a place to stay.
The minimum wage needs to be raised to a living wage and then kept inflation adjusted.
And everyone needs quality affordable health care. But politicians refuse to serve. They want to rule, manage and govern. We don't need that. Nor tolerate that..😠🗽
Individualism lets many people behind.
