Sound engineers, I have a question:

I'm recording the vocals for the next song but I have a problem. The verses are fine but the chorus is much higher, so if I record at the same gain, it's way too distorted.

Is it advisable to lower the gain just for the chorus? I always assumed the gain should be the same throughout the song.

Or should I move farther away from the mic in the chorus?

The thing is, even if I lower the gain a LOT, there's still some distortion in the chorus and I feel like I have to hold back.

What would your advice be? Thx!

Some of it might be mic technique itself - placing the mic away from nose or tilting away from teeth.. create some distance. Try lower placement first. If that sucks, go higher like for an overhead mic. *This advice I guess might depend on what mic you used and how it is affixed.
