Was talking to my wife about Portugal. Right now it’s in a sweet spot of not very authoritarian — government doesn’t bother you, people mostly keep to themselves, are not busybodies — and also very safe. How long it will stay that way, I have no idea.

The EU is a scourge, and Portugal is beholden to it, but Portugal is economically insignificant and geographically isolated (only country it borders is Spain.) And crime could always get worse, but I don’t see a lot of sketchy/openly insane people when I walk around the way I did in San Francisco and Denver this summer.
