"Jews" is translated incorrectly from Ἰουδαίους in the original Greek. It means Judeans, as in from the geographical area, not "Jew" which means a follower of a specific religion.

Agree--what's the incentive to be named among the inhabitants of a geographical area? Why boast about that? It seems clear to me that, whoever the verses refer to, they are the opposite of what they purport to be...
