I was around for that one! It was an ActvityPub software called Pleroma, afterwards it was Soapbox. Felt like everyone talked up building on ActivityPub, but there's some kinda' effort to keep it just Mastodon.

Pleroma doesn't have a nazi rep per se, but the rebased/ soapbox fork was because terf = nazi apparently.
