Put simply, detergents can cause cell lysis, which is when a cell’s membrane (the wall of the cell) is disrupted, enabling the contents of the cell to be released. A technique often used in biological research. Hence why you don’t really want to ingest traces of detergent left on your dishes after washing-up.

Meh. I'm not scared of trace amounts of something possibly harming a couple cells that will be replaced throughout my life.
