Just putting something in the public domain doesn't automatically make it good, but it can make it ubiquitous and lead to a massive single-point of failure. Can take entire economies down by hacking one obscure library.

That is a lessening of quality, not an increase, and needs to be weighed against the utility of using open-source stuff.
