The First Electric Taxi Fleet: A 19th-Century Innovation.
In 1897, New York City witnessed a groundbreaking shift in transportation when Samuel’s Electric Carriage and Wagon Company introduced the first fleet of electric taxis. These early "Electrobat" cabs weighed approximately 1,600 pounds and could travel about 20 miles before requiring a battery swap at the company’s Broadway facility.
A Revolutionary Battery Swap System
One of the most innovative aspects of this service was its battery-swapping system, which allowed taxis to operate continuously through long shifts. This approach, far ahead of its time, closely resembles modern electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure concepts.
America’s First Speeding Ticket
By 1899, the electric taxi fleet had expanded significantly, but it also made history in an unexpected way. One of its drivers, Jacob German, became the recipient of America’s first speeding ticket—charged with driving 12 mph in an 8 mph zone.
The Rise and Fall of Early Electric Taxis
The electric taxis initially thrived, completing thousands of trips and proving that clean, electric-powered transportation was feasible even in the late 19th century. However, infrastructure challenges and high operating costs eventually led to their decline by 1907.
Despite their short-lived success, these pioneering taxis introduced forward-thinking concepts like battery-swapping stations, which would re-emerge over a century later with modern electric vehicles.
