hmm

i don't get it

The individual hasn’t become nihilistic, the despair is from feeling a lacking and the inability to change a situation. The despair leaves when they no longer care about their environment and particular situation.

so the cross-over is from hope to hopelessness?

In the given experience yes. It means giving in to this experience and not enjoying it, while still holding hope for other experiences.
