the greeks knew it wasn't several thousands of years ago. i think that may have been partly because they had also invented a long range communication code that uses fire. a line of sentinel bonfires could have been used by two guys at more than 10 degrees of longitude would have been able to signal across that distance to tell the other side when the sun was at peak.
