F droid is as centralized as the play store. They can remove apps at their wish. Obtainium picks APKs directly from the source.
But yes, the process should be easier.
You could have your own fdroid store hosted and controled by you.

Maybe adding some sort of version metadata for updates on the repo? Like a version manifest. So people don't have to choose the version at least and that enables updates as well.
