Exposure with a film camera is difficult, so maybe I should practice with a digital camera? I'm torn.

Really it's the same but is doing the work for you. To do it manualĺy is not hard. Just the you have different modes of metering.

Do it the manual way. Just meter were you want move camera then tranfere the setting. Use manual

So you need to decide dark alleys or sky in most of your photos. Enjoy.

It depends on the camera. More modern film cameras that I've occasionally used were just so dang good with exposure.

Does the camera have a light meter? There are light meter apps for your phone as well
