Which of these gives the most information?

- Both reviews systems take about the same time to complete.

- Both can be used to calculate a Total Score.

Humans tend to think in "Good" vs "Bad". When it comes to reviews that means "Recommend" vs "Don't Recommend". Add some more specific aspects to judge as good or bad and you've got yourself a pretty complete review.

The information you want from an individual review isn't quantitative. It's basically:

"Would this person recommend this place + what did he like/dislike about it?"

The information you want from a total score, on the other hand, is quantitative. It's:

"How does this compare to other similar things?"

The Good News:

- You can combine both by translating the thumbs into numbers. (Steam already does this succesfully for games)

- Humans suck at translating preferences into numbers and you avoid all that, replacing it with a coherent dose of math.

Why not combine the two? We could show the score (which would be a condensed meaningful info) and the user can click on Ā« show more Ā» that will display all the details

That's what did at first. Showing the score on each individual review.

But that has implications:

1. You can not surprise the user by letting them use thumbs up/down and then once published suddenly show a score on their review

2. So you'd need a way to display the score in the input form

3. That would show how it changes based on the thumbs the user is clicking

4. They will try to game that

5. Then I might as well let them score it with a number in the first place (which, again, humans are very bad at)

Very good point. Then, at first glance, I would prefer the Thumbs version as it provides more meaningful values. šŸ‘

Either šŸŸ¢šŸ”“ or 🚄

Hard to say. 2nd one is better because it breaks it into categories but thumbs up or down is not saying much to me. That cab be highly subjective. I think I’d want to see 5 star rating for each category. My mind already knows that 2 stars bad and 3 and 4 are worth reading
