They know the gold isn't there.

That's my guess too. Trump hates to look bad. I figure there's a 1% chance he tries to fill it for a photo shoot.

The door opens very very slowly (while they restock swiss gold through the back)

If it was empty so much time has passed they could easily have made plans to loan/procure gold to make up whatever should be there.
