it's an interesting fact that cell membranes are an independent organism... if you provide them with the materials they grow and divide and increase in population, the DNA is basically a second organism, a bit like the symbiosis of fungus and algae in lichens
and yeah, that division process also requires mitosis, thus the name "mitochondria" - these regulate synchronising the duplication of the nucleus to allow a cell to divide and become two cells
