Max 3 outbox and inbox relays. Otherwise, you are just making all of your followers send lots of data everywhere.

I limit it to 3 when talking to them but yeah.. smoler relay lists are better.

Random 3 or the first 3? Either way it's bad if you don't know where your DMs are.

Random. I'm even considering not supporting DMs with people that don't opt in to NIP-17, relay lists are insane out there.

I see so many people with 10 or more in and out box relays.

Yep, I think a bunch of clients converted them incorrectly from their old relay lists.
