Are there really any downsides to editing?
I need it... Unless my extremely frequent typos are somehow not annoying yo other prople

Just my opinion: the downside is massive. Being able to edit means anyone at any time can reverse anything they said. Not a basis for discussion imho. To me this is the same as a blockchain that can be rolled back.
Aaand I personally don't care about typos as long as I can read it. Nobody is typo-free and truth > perfection
