One friend of his was talking off-the-record with AfD deputies in Berlin about the c19 vax. His conclusion:

The AfD knows it is bad, but they wont move a finger to stop it or raise the alarm because they want votes from the covidiot majority.

Maybe it is the same issue, they are trying to keep their right-wing votes while still wooing some 'center' voters who are not really against migration.
