I helped a friend take their sats off the exchange and made it exceedingly clear what they needed to do to back them up. Being that they are really intelligent and tech-savvy, and had a good understanding of how important the seed phrase is, I assumed they would take care of it.
Many months later, they told me they had written it in a book and had no idea where it was! We both just hoped they would find them.
Another three months passed and I got a text saying they found them! 😅
The whole incident highlighted hugely for me the importance of holding their hand until they confirm they have two backups, stored securely in two separate locations (ideally with one in steel).
I think us bitcoines fail to realize, or we just forget, how different our level of clarity and understanding is around what it means to be your own bank, and we cannot assume that even very smart people will get it right away.
