The US legal system is weird, convict someone for a crime because ooohhh bad etc. but also, before they go to jail, give them a couple of weeks to do the podcast circuit.

It's because the US jails are full of criminals nobody is actually scared of, who should probably just be getting house arrest, probation, and/or a fine.
So, there's no rush to incarcerate.
