PRIVATE PROPERTY IN BRAZIL? JUST A LEGAL ILLUSION

In the U.S., if you find oil on your land, it’s yours. Want to drill, sell, burn it, or build a mall on top? Go ahead. That’s real private property.

But in Brazil? If you discover oil, gold, or diamonds on your land — forget it. It all belongs to the government.

You can’t extract it, can’t sell it, and depending on the case, you can even lose your land. They send in a technician, evaluate the site, and if it’s profitable: boom, you’re out. State takes over.

“Oh, but you’ll get royalties!”

Sure… a tiny, symbolic percentage while they rake in fortunes.

And when there’s a problem on your land — like a sewage leak? Now it’s your problem alone.

The State is suddenly nowhere to be found.

In Brazil, you don’t really own land — you hold it temporarily, as long as they let you.

What do you think: fair or absurd?
