It's just a question of habits. You were probably in an AmE environment thanks to movies or YouTube videos. Maybe your main language also has more sounds in common with it.

As for teaching, I think BrE is taught in geographical Europe since it's closer to England, which is also "the founder" of the language. Plus, Received Pronunciation (the standard pronunciation) is heavily based on BrE.
