21 aerial refueling tankers took off tonight from the United States, beginning their transatlantic crossing toward Europe, with their likely final destination being the Middle East. This is a rare movement that may indicate the U.S. is preparing to take a more active role in the war against Iran.

Sigh

Reuters has confirmed that the U.S. military redeployed a significant number of aerial refueling tankers to Europe to provide President Trump with additional “options” amid the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. According to U.S. defense officials who spoke to Reuters, the large-scale movement of approximately 30 Air Force refueling tankers to European airbases last night is intended to give President Trump greater flexibility in responding to the escalating war between Israel and Iran.

For reference, the thirty or so aerial-refueling tankers deployed last night to Europe, are less than 10% of the U.S. Air Force’s fleet of KC-135s and KC-46s. The United States has more aerial-refueling aircraft than all other countries in the world combined, and this doesn’t even include other aircraft that can be converted for aerial-refueling, like the F/A-18E Super Hornet.
