Renaissance Italy got its wealth mostly from trading, shipping, (full reserve) banking and engineering. They got filthy rich and could spend like crazy. I doubt there was a lot of force involved in building the Duomo, much more likely a lot of artisans got rich contributing.

But again, I wasn't there at the time.
