So we got this AI software on one of our xray machines to do simple radiologist tasks like evaluate for pneumothorax…and it sucks. Is it because software vendors think radiologists will buy more if the AI is terrible? Or is AI just shitty in general or in this company’s AI just shitty for this task?

I want software to replace me, not make more work for me.

Welcome. For some tasks AI is great,.for others is like a new worker to keep under constant supervision. AI is not going to replace anybody.

I dunno…I’m very hopeful AI can replace a lot of radiologist functions. But the only clinical stuff I use in IRL is shitty AI for mammo (a scam we have to pay for) and for chest film.

Same in my industry, fancy expensive software that looks good on a sales brochure but creates more work for people on the front line.... Once I heard a product manager say a dollar spent on marketing has more impact on revenue than a dollar spent on improving the actual product - sign on the times 🙄

They gotta spend all the money to get something certified. It probably costs more to get a competent general AI model licenced and certified etc. So they get some toy model that just barely works well enough in the basic test cases to get certified. You aren't getting the best possible medical technology; you are getting the cheapest possible thing that can make it through the legal gauntlet.
