This is a great question. It could’ve been other numbers, it’s also technically just below 21M, and the most direct answer is “because that’s how the halving function works out”

However, Satoshi was something of a numerologist and i’m sure some greater nerds than i have juicier thoughts on this

Good question. Not sure why the 21m but I like the idea that circa 130 years from the first Bitcoin until the last is a similar amount of time taken by the reformation. Thinking being that it may be reasonable to think the separation of state and money may take a similar amount of time to the separation of church and state.
