Same story with The Diner Club in the 1950's, then Visa and MasterCard later on.
They grew quickly because they had had a funded salesforce selling the benefits and encentivising merchants.
Bitcoin merchant adoption is slowly growing (we have the data now), but we need this 'salesforce' if we want to do it more quickly.
BTC Map could be an excellent coordinator for this activity, but it would require properly funding over a long timeframe.
