Me too! The respect is earned has always bothered me.

I am curious whether this quote is from someone who distinguishes between respect and decency. I don't hear about 'decency' often. And people generally mean they think it is fair to treat other people with decency, instead of with respect. Unless you do not consider decency and make ("downgrade") respect to more common.
