What degree of centralization matters? Or what kind? There have always been wealthy people, and there have always been thieves, but there has not always been banks. Having wealth is not the same kind of centralization as being a bank. The first banks were in Venice, literally lenders who congregated on the bank or shoreline. The first central bank was the Dutch Wisselbank in the 1600's.
