Oliver Laughland reports on Rachel L. Swarns' book The 272, which focuses on the 272 enslaved people the Jesuits of Maryland and D.C. sold downriver to south Louisiana to fund Georgetown University. As he notes, Swarns forces us to think about what this historical event means by focusing on the history of a single enslaved family, the Mahoneys.
