I see your point, but this wasn't always the raison d'etre of colleges.

I do believe that at one point in time the really were dedicated to the pursuit of truth, wherever that led to.

In other words colleges used to produce thinkers, and now they produce apparatchiks that will toe the party line.

When did this change? What was the inflection point.

As mentioned earlier, like so many of these changes, one invariably finds a connection to the introduction of the fiat system.
