It is very concerning that self-hosting one’s email is becoming unviable in early 2020s. Will email just die or will it be a centralized hellhole? A legacy system only used by businesses?

because of the blacklists and spam lists, basically. just have to use trusted privacy providers

Spam is a real problem but it could be solved without centralization of email servers. I understand why it happened but makes me wonder about centralization of other currently distributed systems.
